What to Expect
Before Your Appointment
- Follow examination-specific instructions from the imaging center.
- Some abdominal studies require fasting; some pelvic studies require a full bladder.
- Wear comfortable clothing and bring the order and requested records.
- Tell staff about recent procedures or symptoms relevant to the examination.
During the Examination
- A technologist applies gel to the skin over the area being examined.
- A handheld transducer is moved across the skin to obtain images.
- Some pelvic examinations may include an internal ultrasound when ordered and appropriate.
- The examination length varies by body area and clinical question.
Ultrasound Safety & Preparation
Ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation. Preparation varies considerably by examination, so follow the facility’s fasting, hydration, or bladder instructions carefully.
