What to Expect
Before Your Appointment
- Schedule when breasts are less tender if possible.
- Do not use deodorant, powder, lotion, or perfume on the chest or underarms on the day of the examination unless the facility says otherwise.
- Bring prior mammogram images or identify where they were performed.
- Tell staff about breast symptoms, implants, pregnancy, or breastfeeding.
During the Examination
- A technologist positions each breast on the mammography unit.
- Brief compression is applied to spread the tissue and obtain clear images.
- More views may be needed for diagnostic examinations.
- Tell the technologist if you experience significant discomfort.

Screening recommendations depend on age, risk factors, prior history, and clinician guidance. A diagnostic mammogram is not the same as routine screening. New breast symptoms should be discussed promptly with a healthcare professional.
