What to Expect
Before Your Appointment
- Follow the imaging center’s instructions, including any fasting requirements.
- Tell staff about pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney disease, diabetes, allergies, and prior contrast reactions.
- Ask whether laboratory testing is required before intravenous contrast.
- Bring the order, identification, insurance information if applicable, and relevant prior imaging.
During the Examination
- You will lie on a table that moves through a short, ring-shaped scanner.
- The technologist may ask you to hold your breath briefly.
- Some examinations use oral or intravenous contrast to improve visibility.
- The scan itself is often brief, although preparation may take additional time.
CT Radiation & Contrast Safety
CT uses ionizing radiation. The imaging facility selects a protocol intended to obtain the needed information while managing radiation exposure. Contrast may not be appropriate for every patient, so complete screening is essential.
